Jim Hodges’ Unearthed is a monumental bronze cast of an uprooted tree stump. The truncated form resonates with majesty while also serving as a mournful reminder of humankind’s impact upon the natural world. It has been displayed only once before, in 2019 in Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, where it was accompanied by rites of faith, musical performances, and readings, as well as by a community’s presence, participation, and social interaction. Unearthed has its second residency at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Washington State University in 2026-27, including a special performance series including music, readings, and dance.

On January 29 and 30th choreographer Corrie Befort responds to Jim Hodges’ Unearthed with a newly created dance, The inversions. The circling and cycling dance is a gradually formed network of signals; messages of love, warning, endurance. With music by sound artist Jason E Anderson, The inversions intertwines celebrated professional dancers with beloved community elders from the Palouse Dance for Parkinson’s+ Program.

Free and open to the public. Please RSVP to one of the two performances to reserve your spot.
