SUMMARY:2026 | UNEARTHED PERFORMANCE with Cellist Ruth Boden: “Conversations with Our Roots”
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, September 23\, join us for a special UNEARTHED performance with Cellist Ruth Boden\nUNEARTHED PERFORMANCE with Cellist Ruth Boden: “Conversations with Our Roots”\n12:00 pm to 1:00 pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nJim Hodges’ Unearthed (a work in progress) is a monumental bronze cast of an uprooted tree stump. The truncated form resonates with majesty while also serving as a mournful reminder of humankind’s impact upon the natural world. It has been displayed only once before\, in 2019 in Grace Cathedral in San Francisco\, where it was accompanied by rites of faith\, musical performances\, and readings\, as well as by a community’s presence\, participation\, and social interaction. Unearthed has its second residency at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Washington State University\, providing the academic and regional community an occasion to approach the work through intentional participation. \nJoin us for a special performance series with Unearthed this fall 2026\, including music\, readings\, and dance. On Wednesday\, September 23 School of Music faculty member Ruth Boden responds to Unearthed through cello instrumentation and spoken word. Drop in anytime between 12:00-1:00pm for this musical conversation between Ruth Boden and Unearthed. \nFree and open to the public. \nAbout the Performer | Ruth Boden is an Associate Professor in the School of Music at Washington State University where she teaches cello\, bass\, music theory and coordinates the chamber music program. Ruth is an active performer and has appeared as a guest artist with the Mid-Columbia Symphony\, Washington Idaho Symphony\, Coeur d’Alene Symphony\, and gave the premier performance of Philip Wharton’s Concerto for Violin and Cello with the Rendezvous Orchestra in Moscow\, Idaho. She has also been a member of numerous orchestras throughout the Southeast and Northwest and has worked with several notable chamber artists including the Vermeer\, Juilliard\, Miami\, and Cavani String Quartets and the Diaz Trio. Ruth is a staunch supporter of new and contemporary music. She released her first solo CD Off the Cuff in July of 2014 which features eclectic contemporary music for solo cello. An avid hiker and lover of the outdoors\, Ruth spends parts of her summers backpacking with her cello and performing new works commissioned for her project Music Outside Four Walls. On Saturday\, October 10th the Palouse Choral Society Chamber Choir responds to Unearthed through song\, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Myers\, Artistic Director. A fallen tree in nature creates an opening for new growth. In the shadow of this monumental work\, PCS’s Chamber Choir will sing about what we owe one another and how to nurture a shared society\, performing selections from “US” by Michael Bussewitz-Quarm. \nFree and open to the public. Please RSVP to reserve your spot (see link above). \n  \nAbout | Palouse Choral Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to building connection and belonging on the Palouse through choral music. They bring over 150 volunteer singers together across a growing family of auditioned and non-auditioned ensembles. PCS’s Chamber Choir is an intimate group of select singers focused on complex\, small-group choral artistry. \nDr. Matthew Myers works as assistant professor of choral music education at Washington State University\, where he conducts the University Singers and Treble Choir and teaches courses in music education\, conducting\, and voice pedagogy. He earned his DMA in choral conducting from Louisiana State University\, his master’s degree in choral conducting from Northern Arizona University\, and his bachelor’s degree in vocal performance and music education from Luther College. After completing his degree at Luther\, he taught grades 6-12 choir at The American International School of Muscat in Oman. He has served as conductor of the NAU Men’s Chorale and Chamber Singers\, the LSU Chamber Singers\, the Master Chorale of Flagstaff\, and the Flagstaff Youth Chorale and has held church music positions in Iowa\, Illinois\, Louisiana\, and Alabama. Prior to his time at Washington State University\, Dr. Myers taught at the University of Alabama\, where he conducted two choirs and taught courses in music appreciation\, choral literature\, vocal pedagogy\, and diction. \nLocation & Parking\nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus.
