Schnitzer\n4:00 pm to 5:00 pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nJoin executive director Ryan Hardesty and guest artists Michael Brophy\, Zorawar Sidhu\, and Rob Swainston for a tour with special insight into curatorial decisions behind the exhibition The Mirror that Nature Holds from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. Debuting this fall at WSU’s Schnitzer Museum\, the exhibition brings together a vast array of contemporary artists whose practices reflect the natural world as a site of wonder\, memory\, unease\, and potential. In dialogue with the philosophical legacy of the sublime\, The Mirror that Nature Holds explores how artists today approach landscapes that inspire awe even as they signal precarity. The exhibition includes over 90 works across painting\, print\, sculpture\, and installation drawn from the unparalleled collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer. The Foundation has shared its art with millions across the U.S. and internationally through groundbreaking exhibitions\, publications\, and programs. Founded by ARTnews Top 200 Collector Jordan D. Schnitzer—whose passion for art began in his mother’s contemporary art gallery in Portland\, Ore.—the Foundation has organized over 180 exhibitions from its collection and additionally loaned thousands of artworks to over 130 museums at no cost to the institutions. Schnitzer began collecting contemporary prints and multiples in 1988 and today is North America’s foremost print collector. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation\nOpening Celebration & Arts First Thursdays\n5:00 pm to 7:00 pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nCelebrate our recently-opened exhibition The Mirror that Nature Holds from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation as well as additional exhibitions Jim Hodges: Unearthed and JSMA Collects. Enjoy appetizers from Gabagool Charcuterie and live music with Crimson Ties World Music Ensemble\, view the exhibitions\, and mingle with museum staff\, special guests\, as well as collector and philanthropist Jordan D. Schnitzer. Live music provided. \nThis reception also launches Arts First Thursdays\, a new series at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art created to bring community members together for after-hours experiences at the museum. Each evening will celebrate the visual\, culinary\, and performing arts through vibrant programs and shared experiences. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Community Perspectives Talk with Spokane-based author Jack Nisbet\nThursday\, September 17\, 2026 \nThe Art of Fire: Tribal Burning on the Northwest Landscape\n4:00 – 5:00 pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nJoin Spokane-based teacher and naturalist Jack Nisbet for a presentation of fur trade era paintings that demonstrate how Plateau and Coastal peoples used intentional burning to manage the landscapes around them. With tribal oral accounts and early journal observations for context\, we will explore details from these early artworks to shed light on relevant landscapes from The Mirror that Nature Holds: From the Collections of Jordan Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. \nCommunity Perspectives Talks & Tours invite individuals from our campus and wider community to speak about their unique interpretation of several works in the current exhibitions\, charting connections among art\, personal experience\, and different disciplines. \nAbout the Speaker | Spokane-based author Jack Nisbet has written several collections of essays that explore the human and natural history of the Columbia River drainage\, as well as award-winning biographies of cartographer David Thompson\, naturalist David Douglas\, and homesteader/forest surveyor/physician couple John and Carrie Leiberg. The Mapmaker’s Eye: David Thompson on the Columbia Plateau and David Douglas: A Naturalist at Work are published by WSU Press. In 2018\, the Washington State Historical Society awarded Nisbet the Robert Gray medal for significant and long-term contributions to Northwest history.
