SUMMARY:2026 | COMMUNITY PERSPECTIVES TOUR with Quilter Rochelle Smith
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, January 15 for a tour with librarian Rochelle Smith for a quilter’s perspective on current exhibitions\nThursday\, January 15\, 2025\, 3:00-4:00pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nJoin Rochelle Smith for a quilter’s perspective on select works in Color Outside the Lines\, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. The exhibition includes two textile works using quilting and appliqué techniques by artists Faith Ringgold and Christopher Myers. Open discussion among tour participants will be encouraged throughout the tour\, facilitated by guest Rochelle Smith and Kristin Becker\, Curator of Education & Programs. \nAbout the Speaker | Rochelle Smith is a librarian working with the humanities\, art\, and architecture departments at the University of Idaho.  She is also a published poet and essayist\, and is currently working on a nonfiction book about mythology.  An avid quilter\, knitter\, spinner and mender\, she has been doing patchwork since she was twelve and has been a Faith Ringgold fan for over thirty years. \nCommunity Perspective Tours invite individuals from our campus and wider community to speak about their unique interpretation of several works in the current exhibitions\, charting connections among art\, personal experience\, and different disciplines. \nUpcoming Community Perspective Tour Dates With Rochelle Smith:\nFebruary 28\, 2026 \nImage | Christopher Myers\, A Story Falls Into the Ocean\, 2019\, 118 x 224 in.\n© Christopher Myers 2019. DESCRIPTION:Join us the second Saturday of every month\, October through June*\, for a story hour and family-friendly activities.\nSaturday\, January 17\, 2026\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nA featured children’s book will be read at 10:00am\, followed by a short discussion or tour\, then a hands-on activity for young learners K-5 and their caregivers. All ages are welcome to join. Drop in anytime between 10:00am and 12:00pm\, but arrive at 10:00am for the story. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the art museum for the MLK Week: Writers Give Voice 2026\nMLK Week: Writers Give Voice & Open Mic\nFriday\, January 23\, 2026 12:00–1:30pm\nLocation: Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU\nLivestreamed via the WSU System YouTube channel \nAs part of MLK Week 2026\, the museum and WSU’s English Department will host a reading and open mic program. This year’s theme is A Call to Consciousness. Readers will include WSU Campus Civic Poets & finalists\, creative writing students and faculty\, and student editors of WSU creative writing publications. \nAll students\, faculty\, staff\, and community members are invited to bring a poem to read during the open mic portion. Poems may be original compositions or selected from the work of another author\, though they should engage with the theme of the day. Sign up to to read in person or via zoom. \nIn collaboration with the Holland Terrell Library’s Manuscripts\, Archives\, and Special Collections (MASC)\, the event will be accompanied by a letterpress printing of a relevant poem. \nBefore and after the program\, visitors are encouraged to view current museum exhibitions\, including Color Outside the Lines and Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins\, both from From the Collections of Jordan D.
