SUMMARY:2016 FALL | NW Alternative Comics Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art/WSU announces a Northwest Alternative Comics Exhibition\, Sep. 26–Dec. 17. AN OPENING RECEPTION WILL BE HELD 5-7 PM THURSDAY\, OCTOBER 6\, IN THE MUSEUM OF ART GALLERY. Admission to the museum is free. \nABOUT | The Northwest is seen by many as the birthplace of alternative comics\, a genre which blended the legacy of Bay-Area “underground comix” with a DIY punk-ethos\, while in step with a burgeoning independent music scene. Coalescing around The Evergreen State College in the early 1980s\, gifted cartoonists Matt Groening\, Lynda Barry\, and Charles Burns published their comic strips in small alternative weeklies\, helping to lay the foundation for the cultural phenomenon that would develop around Seattle in the 1990s. Originally underground and bohemian-based\, today the regional comic scene is bigger and more active than ever before. \nNorthwest Alternative Comics will feature a select sampling of emerging and highly-recognized artists and illustrators who make up the alternative comics genre of our region. With an emphasis on individuals who are willing to reinvent the way we look at and experience the art of comics and graphic arts\, our exhibition offers an alternative to mainstream superhero comics by highlighting diverse narratives and new visual formats. The exhibition includes artists Peter Bagge\, Paul Chadwick\, Max Clotfelter\, Taylor Dow\, Ellen Forney\, Eroyn Franklin\, David Lasky\, Mita Mahato\, Tom Van Deusen and Jim Woodring.  Special thanks to exhibit advisors Larry Reid of Fantagraphics Books and Casey Bruce of Danger Room Comics. \nCOUGAR COMIX JAM:  Thurs\, 9/22\, 5-10pm\, Rico’s Pub\, Downtown Pullman\nLearn to make comic zines with Tom and Max. Materials are provided – just show up and “jam”!\nARTIST MURAL COLLABORATION: Fri\, 9/23\,10am-4pm\, MOA Gallery\nWatch Seattle cartoonists Tom Van Deusen and Max Clotfelter paint a 12×16 foot mural as curators prepare for the opening 9/26.\nPETER BAGGE ARTIST LECTURE: Thurs\, 11/3\, 6pm\, MOA Gallery\nJoin Peter Bagge\, as he weaves the story of the NW alternative comics scene and his career as Weirdo magazine’s managing editor. \nLOCATION | The Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Eroyn Franklin as she presents a comic reading\, discussion and video! \nDETAILS | Wednesday\, October 5th\, 1:10pm – 2:30pm\, MOA Gallery \nABOUT | Eroyn Franklin is a Seattle-based maker of comics including 2 graphic novels\, Detained and Another Glorious Day at the Nothing Factory. She is one of the founders of Short Run\, an annual small press festival and year-round resource that celebrates comics\, zines\, and art books with a focus on limited editions\, self-published\, and handmade books. Eroyn Franklin will be discussing creativity as a solo and collaborative pursuit. DESCRIPTION:Hear Mita Mahato share her thoughts\, and then join her in making some comics! \nDETAILS | Thursday\, Oct 6th\, 1:30pm – 3:30pm Museum of Art Gallery \nABOUT | Mita Mahato’s cut paper art and comics explore the transformative capacities of found and handmade paper using layered shapes\, textures\, and colors that together build multivalent images and stories. Her most recent cut paper comic “Sea” was recognized by Cartoonists NW as 2015’s “best comic book” and will be the subject of continued work during her participation in the Arctic Circle Residency in 2017. Her comics and collaborative projects have been spotlighted by The Stranger\, Seattle Review of Books\, and AV Club. She is Associate Professor of English at the University of Puget Sound\, serves on the board for Short Run Seattle\, and teaches art workshops for Seattle Aquarium’s Creativity Inspiring Conservation program\, Henry Art Gallery’s ArtVenture program\, and other community organizations. She lives in Seattle. \nNOTES | Public event\, everyone is welcome!
