SUMMARY:2025 | Slow Light Workshop: Seeing Light Part 1 — Building and Using a Pinhole Camera
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for the third workshop in the Slow Light Series and make a pinhole camera: Aug 8 & Aug 15 (NOTE: Aug 1 workshop has been changed to Aug 8!)\nSlow Light Workshop: Seeing Light — Building and Using a Pinhole Camera\nFriday\, August 8 and Friday\, August 15\, 2025\, 4:00-6:00pm\nDepartment of Fine Arts WSU\, Pullman\, WA (meet at the building entrance) \nRegistration Link \nParticipants will learn about pinhole photography\, construct their own cameras\, and use them to make photographic exposures inspired by the Palouse. This hands-on workshop invites participants to slow down and engage deeply with light\, time\, and material. We’ll explore the roots of photography through simple optical tools\, and develop prints that reveal subtle shifts in perception and presence. \nOn August 8\, participants will learn how pinhole photography works\, construct their own cameras using 3-D printed kits (provided)\, and expose and develop their first image in the Department of Fine Arts darkroom. Then\, before the follow-up workshop on August 15\, participants will be encouraged to make their own place-based images as they explore local landscapes. On Friday\, August 15\, participants will return to the darkroom to develop images and discuss what they learned. This will also be an opportunity to help curate “Slow Light\,” a pop-up exhibition of work produced during the summer workshops. \n\n\nThis is the third workshop in the Slow Light Series\, which engages alternative photography processes such as cyanotype and pinhole cameras\, as well as place-based storytelling and imagery. See the museum’s event calendar for additional workshops. Participants may register for any Slow Light Workshop: You are welcome to take just one\, or all of them! (If you register for Seeing Light\, make sure you are ready to attend on both August 8 and August 15.) Each workshop is free and open to the public\, though registration is required. See link above. \nAbout the Teacher | Keegan Baatz is a photographic artist and MFA candidate at Washington State University. His work explores themes of infrastructure\, fragmentation\, and place through experimental photographic processes including CMYK separation\, physical intervention\, and analog techniques. Baatz’s practice bridges documentary and material experimentation to reframe how we see rural and infrastructural landscapes\, often engaging with systems theory\, archival impulse\, and ecological observation. \nFunding | Provided by a Publicly Engaged Fellowship from the David G. Pollart Center for Arts and Humanities. Organized by Keegan Baatz\, MFA Candidate\, Department of Art WSU and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU. \nImage | Courtesy of Keegan Baatz \n\n\n\n\nLocation & Parking\nThis workshop takes place at the Fine Arts Center on Wilson Road across from the south entrance to Martin Stadium on the WSU Pullman campus. Hourly parking is available in the Smith Center Garageoff Stadium Way. See the 2024-25 WSU Pullman Parking map and/or contact the Brelsford Visitor Centerfor additional campus parking advice.

SUMMARY:2025 | CURATORIAL TOUR with Maryanna G. Ramirez and Ryan Hardesty
DESCRIPTION:Special Exhibition Tour Led by the Museum Curators\nOn September 25 from 12:00-1:00pm\, join Maryanna G. Ramirez and Ryan Hardesty at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU for special insight into curatorial decisions behind the exhibitions Color Outside the Lines and Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins\, both From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. \nAbout\nMaryanna G. Ramirez\, Director of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Portland State University\, curated Color Outside the Lines From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation\, which debuted in Portland\, OR in 2024. The exhibition examines the ways artists have used color to question institutions\, beliefs\, and expectations. Some of the artists celebrate and amplify colors intrinsic to their cultures\, showcasing beauty once dismissed or rendered invisible. Others employ color to confront stereotypes and subvert expectations\, or as a tool to challenge institutions or to assert control. \nRyan Hardesty\, Director of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU\, curated Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation\, debuting this fall at the WSU Schnitzer Museum. The exhibition offers a bold and extensive survey of the four-decade-long printmaking practice by an artist internationally renowned for his beguiling experiments with form across mediums and materials. \n\n\nImage | Curatorial tour of Color Outside the Lines From the Collections of Jordan D. SUMMARY:2025 | VISITING WRITERS SERIES: Alexandra Teague\, Michael McGriff\, and Thomas Dai
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, October 14th for the WSU Department of English Visiting Writers Series!\nVISITING WRITERS SERIES: WSU Department of English Welcomes Thomas Dai\, Michael McGriff\, and Alexandra Teague from the University of Idaho\n5:30pm–7:00pm\, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nJoin us for the WSU Department of English Visiting Writers Series! Every year VWS brings noted poets and writers of fiction and nonfiction to campus for readings\, class visits\, workshops\, and collaborative exchanges across intellectual and artistic disciplines. This October we welcome creative writing faculty from the nearby University of Idaho to share recent writings and experiences. \nThomas Dai is the author of Take My Name but Say It Slow (W. W. Norton\, 2025)\, a collection of essays interrogating travel\, place\, Asian American identity\, and other imperfect means of mapping the self. He primarily teaches courses on creative nonfiction\, especially the essay in all its many forms\, but is also interested in autofiction\, science and nature writing\, and writing that integrates visual media. With a background in both creative and critical writing practices\, Thomas’s more recent work interweaves creative nonfiction with more scholarly writing to think about the intersections of race\, queerness\, and ecology. \nMichael McGriff is an author\, editor\, and translator. He is the co-author\, with J. M. Tyree\, of the linked story collection Our Secret Life in the Movies\, which was selected as one of NPR’s Best Books of 2014 and featured on Weekend Edition Sunday. His poetry collections include Inquest\, Angel Sharpening its Beak\, Eternal Sentences\, Early Hour\, Black Postcards\, Home Burial\, and Dismantling the Hills. \nAlexandra Teague is the author of three books of poetry: Or What We’ll Call Desire (Persea\, 2019)\, The Wise and Foolish Builders(Persea\, 2015)\, and Mortal Geography (Persea\, 2010). She is also the author of the novel The Principles Behind Flotation (Skyhorse\, 2017) and a memoir in essays\, Spinning Tea Cups: A Mythical American Memoir (Oregon State University Press\, 2023). Her work has been praised in such publications as Booklist\, The Huffington Post\, and The New York Times as “a strong feminist penman to watch\,” “formally impressive\,” and “passionate\, quirky\, and righteously outraged.” \nImage | Alexandra Teague\, Michael McGriff\, and Thomas Dai \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation & Parking\nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus. SUMMARY:2026 | Mimi Jung: Artist Talk and Reception
DESCRIPTION:An Artist Talk and Reception with Mimi Jung\nTuesday\, March 31 from 4:00 to 6:00pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nOn Tuesday\, March 31 at 4:00 pm\, artist Mimi Jung will offer a public talk in the museum in reference to the exhibition Mimi Jung: An Unfinished Origin. Jung’s work expresses a deep interest in identity\, transformation\, and the spaces between what is known and unknown. Using a loom-based practice and unconventional materials such as paper\, foam\, and cast metal\, she creates woven sculptural forms that appear unfinished or in flux\, inviting close\, reflective viewing. These evolving structures mirror the way personal narratives shift over time within larger cultural contexts. \nAfter the talk\, guests are invited to a reception in the galleries\, offering time to engage more deeply with Jung’s work and connect with the artist in an informal setting. Light refreshments will be served. This program is free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artist\nMimi Jung received a BFA from Cooper Union and attended Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst Basel and Städelschule for postgraduate studies. She has mounted exhibitions throughout the United States\, including Missoula Art Museum\, Nina Johnson Gallery in Miami and Harper’s Gallery in New York. Her work has also been exhibited at Les Gens Heureux in Copenhagen\, KIAF in Seoul\, Zonamaco in Mexico City\, Somerset House and Cadogan Gallery in London\, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. \nOrganized by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Funding for this exhibition is provided by the Samuel H. and Patricia W. Smith Endowment and friends of the museum. \nLocation\nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus. Hourly parking is available in the Smith Center Garage off Stadium Way and most Green lots on campus are free after 5pm and on weekends. For more information please see the museum’s Visit page.

SUMMARY:Poems and Visual Arts of the Plant Companion Field Guide
DESCRIPTION:Poems and Visual Arts of the Plant Companion Field Guide\nThursday\, April 23\, 4:00-5:00pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nThis event celebrates the work of several artists who played a role in creating Plant Companion Field Guide: A New(Old) Way to Know the Plants of the Palouse. In this durable book\, Linda Russo’s poems and essayettes for five Indigenous Palouse Prairie plants are presented alongside botanical portraits by Cori Dantini. Emphasizing companionship between humans and plants throughout time and place\, Plant Companion asks: How can getting to know plants take part in transforming relationships to the land we inhabit\, the traditional homelands of the Nimíipuu and Pelúuc\, and to each other? Can we together remember and image future lineages of earth-honoring practices of interspecies kinship\, reciprocity\, and care? \nThe event will feature a short poetry reading\, Shalla Newman’s printed broadsides framed by David Herbold\, and a preview of copies of Plant Companion Field Guide\, designed by Krista Brand. Free and open to the public. \nPlant Companion Field Guide is funded by the 2025–26 David G. Pollart Center for Arts and Humanities Faculty Fellowship. \nLocation & Parking\nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus. Hourly parking is available in the Smith Center Garage off Stadium Way and most Green lots on campus are free after 5pm and on weekends. For more information please see the museum’s Visit page.
