SUMMARY:2025 | La Granada: Short Films Inspired by Food
DESCRIPTION:Join us for La Granada and other short films inspired by food\nMonday\, February 3\, 2025\, 5:00–6:30 p.m.\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU\n \nRSVP LINK\n \nJoin WSU student filmmaker Hollen Foster-Grahler at the museum for a screening of her short film La Granada. Shot in Aberystwyth\, Wales\, the film is a visual journey exploring feminine rage\, empowerment\, and community through surrealist imagery and movement. The title and central emblem of the film\, la granada\, is the Spanish word for both “pomegranate” and “grenade”—simultaneously a symbol of femininity and destruction. Through this dual meaning\, the film examines the precarious nature of womanhood: What happens when that potential energy is finally released? \nLa Granada will be screened with another short film\, Raspando Coco\, directed by Pilar Egüez Guevara\, that also draws inspiration from food\, in connection with the museum’s current exhibition The Art of Food: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. After the screening\, we will facilitate discussion and Q&A\, and there will be additional time to view The Art of Food exhibition. (The galleries will open at 4pm for visitors who wish to view the exhibition in advance of the films.) Light refreshments will be provided; semi-formal attire is encouraged. Please RSVP to attend: See link above. \nThis program is sponsored by SEB Arts & Spotlight\, as well as STAGE and Honors Student Advisory Council. \nImage | Film stills from La Granada by Hollen Foster-Grahler \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus. Her first solo exhibition was in 1984 in Los Angeles\, where she showed a major ceramic installation\, Bad Manners (Version 1). Lysohir was adjunct professor at WSU-Pullman from 1979-1985 and has served as visiting art professor at numerous universities including Kansas City Art Institute\, University of Idaho\, and New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Her list of accolades includes lectures\, workshops\, and two Kohler Factory Arts in Industry Program residences. \nCommon Reading Series | The 2024-25 Common Reading Series at the museum is a collaboration between the Schnitzer Museum WSU and the WSU Common Reading Program. SUMMARY:2025 | Workshop: Love Letter Zines with David Janssen Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Create a zine that expresses something about the things you LOVE\nWorkshop\nSaturday\, February 8\, 2025\, 1:00-3:00pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU\nWorkshop is full\, but you may register for the waitlist using this Qualtrics Survey \nDuring this workshop we will talk about love and receive an introduction to zines: What is a zine and how do you make one? Using current museum exhibitions\, we will discuss artists and makers who use similar themes and feelings in their work. Finally\, we will be challenged to create a zine that expresses something about things you LOVE with creative words and images. We will use mixed media processes including collage\, free form poetry\, illustrations\, and more. All are welcome: Enjoy a relaxing workshop and make loving and tender artworks inspired by love. \nThis workshop is free and open to the public\, but registration is required (see above). Up to 20 people may register. When registration is full\, a waitlist will be activated and waitlisted individuals will be contacted. \nFunding for this program is provided by the David G. Pollart Center for Arts and Humanities. \nAbout the Artist | This workshop will be led by Scholarly Assistant Professor David Janssen Jr. from the Department of Art at WSU Pullman. Janssen enjoys communicating with others through drawing\, painting\, collage\, and typographic experimentation. He creates paintings with found objects\, designs posters\, and publishes zines\, merging a passion for graphic design and a variety of 2D media. Mixing processes and materials—both by hand and digitally—is a rewarding challenge that keeps his creative process forgiving\, heartfelt\, and unpredictable. David Janssen Jr.’s art is featured in the current exhibition\, Your Collection: Faculty Remix\, which on view January 14 through June 28\, 2025. \nWorkshops offer adults an opportunity to explore artmedia or art concepts under the guidance of a practicing artist and in connection with a theme from the current exhibitions. \n\n\nImage | David Janssen Jr. Inside Yelling Zines. 2024. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation\nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus. SUMMARY:2025 | Common Reading Series: Feasting and Fasting in Religious Traditions with Kristine Zakarison
DESCRIPTION:Join Kristine Zakarison for a talk about feasting and fasting rituals in different religions\nCommon Reading Series Talk\nWednesday\, February 26\, 2025\, 12:00-1:00pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nWe enter into this world\, among other things—hungry! Shortly before we draw our last breath\, we begin our final journey by voluntarily abstaining from food and even water. In the course of our lives\, regardless of ethnicity or class\, we come together and share food in times of celebration and remembrance\, and we may find ourselves forgoing food at times of trauma or sorrow. This rhythm of the human body\, one of feasting at times\, and other times fasting\, has been ritualized in spiritual life in many religions\, cultures\, and historical moments. As the global community looks ahead to the start of three major religions’ observances—Ramadan (February 28)\, Lent (March 4)\, and Passover (April 12)—come join us for this talk by Kristine Zakarison\, a retired minister of the United Church of Christ. \nAbout | Kristine Zakarison is a third-generation daughter of the Palouse\, and as such has worn many “hats” in the community. The connecting threads are respect for this land\, being of service to the community\, and a desire to help others feel better. She is a retired minister of the United Church of Christ and has over 25 years of experience teaching yoga. She is the owner and a teacher of Nia and yoga at Aloft Studio in Pullman\, as well as offering Yoga Therapy to individuals and groups. \nHosted by the WSU Pullman Common Reading Program and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU. \nImage | The Art of Food exhibition: Katherine Ace; Crop Circles 2 (detail); 2008; Oil\, alkyd\, mixed media on canvas; Collection of Jordan D. SUMMARY:2025 | Mount St. Helens Commemoration & Flatware Program
DESCRIPTION:ONE DAY ONLY: View the display of 100 ash-glazed plates created in the WSU ceramics lab\nMount St. Helens Commemoration and Flatware Program\nWednesday\, March 5\, 2025\, 4:00-5:30pm\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nMay 18\, 2025 marks the 45th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens. A significant portion of the 540 million tons of ash that spewed from the volcano settled across Central and Eastern Washington\, and inventive ceramists in the region collected the ash to make beautiful glazes. To commemorate the explosive history of Mount St. Helens\, the WSU Art Department invited participation in the creation of 100 pieces of flatware which were then finished using Mt. St. Helens ash glazes developed in the WSU ceramics lab. Workshop participants—including students and community members—learned about volcanic ash\, assisted in rolling clay\, and shaped one or more plates. Participants were also invited back to glaze plates once they were bisque fired. Additional plates were made and glazed by WSU students\, faculty\, and staff during ceramics classes and clay club sessions. \nThe commemoration culminates on Wednesday\, March 5\, 2025 at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU in connection with The Art of Food\, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. All 100 plates will be on display starting at 10am\, accompanied by a program at 4pm about the significance of the eruption at WSU and in our region. Kassie Smith\, Ceramics Technician for the WSU Department of Art\, will speak about Mt. St. Helens ash and the eruption in relation to the ceramics community past and present. Mark O’English\, University Archivist for WSU\, will share some stories from the archives about the WSU community’s reaction to the eruption. \nThe plates will be given away at the event for a suggested donation per plate on a first come first served basis beginning at 4:00pm\, with donations going to support regional food insecurity. Donations will be collected by the Pullman’s Community Action Center via credit card machine/PayPal/Venmo. When you arrive at the program you may claim a plate once you make a donation by placing a sticker on the bottom with your name. We ask that the plates remain on the display table until hors d’oeuvres are served during the second half of the program so visitors may view all 100 plates. \nHors d’oeuvres created by Knead Café and Pâtisserie. A gluten-free option will be available. \nOrganized by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and the WSU Art Department\, with special thanks to Io Palmer and Kassie Smith. Funding for this program is provided by the Office of the Chancellor WSU and by a grant from Jordan Schnitzer and The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation. \n\n\nImage | Ash glaze samples shown at the Mt. SUMMARY:2025 | Slow Light Workshop: Sun Prints & Found Object Stories
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for the first workshop in the Slow Light Series\, engaging alternative process photography and place-based storytelling\nSlow Light Workshop: Sun Prints & Found Object Stories\nFriday\, June 13\, 2025\, 4:00-6:00pm\nDepartment of Fine Arts WSU\, Pullman\, WA (meet at the entrance) \nRegistration Link \nParticipants will explore the cyanotype process—a historic\, camera-free method of creating rich blue-hued prints using paper coated with light-sensitive chemistry. Using found and natural objects with interesting shapes and varying transparency\, participants will compose and expose images under sunlight\, revealing how simple materials and time may shape compelling visual narratives. This workshop centers on experimentation\, tactile making\, and connections between memory and material. \nThis is the first workshop in the Slow Light Series\, which engages alternative photography processes such as cyanotype and pinhole cameras\, as well as place-based storytelling and imagery. See the museum’s event calendar for additional workshops. Participants may register for any Slow Light Workshop: You are welcome to take just one\, or all of them! Each workshop is free and open to the public\, though registration is required. See link above. \nAbout the Teacher | Keegan Baatz is a photographic artist and MFA candidate at Washington State University. His work explores themes of infrastructure\, fragmentation\, and place through experimental photographic processes including CMYK separation\, physical intervention\, and analog techniques. Baatz’s practice bridges documentary and material experimentation to reframe how we see rural and infrastructural landscapes\, often engaging with systems theory\, archival impulse\, and ecological observation. \nFunding | Provided by a Publicly Engaged Fellowship from the David G. Pollart Center for Arts and Humanities. Organized by Keegan Baatz\, MFA Candidate\, Department of Art WSU and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU. \nImage  | Courtesy of Keegan Baatz \n\n\n\n\nLocation & Parking\nThis workshop takes place at the Fine Arts Center on Wilson Road across from the south entrance to Martin Stadium on the WSU Pullman campus. SUMMARY:2025 | CURATORIAL TOUR with Maryanna G. Ramirez and Ryan Hardesty
DESCRIPTION:Special Exhibition Tour Led by the Museum Curators\nOn September 25 from 12:00-1:00pm\, join Maryanna G. Ramirez and Ryan Hardesty at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU for special insight into curatorial decisions behind the exhibitions Color Outside the Lines and Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins\, both From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. \nAbout\nMaryanna G. Ramirez\, Director of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Portland State University\, curated Color Outside the Lines From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation\, which debuted in Portland\, OR in 2024. The exhibition examines the ways artists have used color to question institutions\, beliefs\, and expectations. Some of the artists celebrate and amplify colors intrinsic to their cultures\, showcasing beauty once dismissed or rendered invisible. Others employ color to confront stereotypes and subvert expectations\, or as a tool to challenge institutions or to assert control. \nRyan Hardesty\, Director of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU\, curated Anish Kapoor: Dissolving Margins From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation\, debuting this fall at the WSU Schnitzer Museum. The exhibition offers a bold and extensive survey of the four-decade-long printmaking practice by an artist internationally renowned for his beguiling experiments with form across mediums and materials. \n\n\nImage | Curatorial tour of Color Outside the Lines From the Collections of Jordan D. SUMMARY:2025 | VISITING WRITERS SERIES: Alexandra Teague\, Michael McGriff\, and Thomas Dai
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, October 14th for the WSU Department of English Visiting Writers Series!\nVISITING WRITERS SERIES: WSU Department of English Welcomes Thomas Dai\, Michael McGriff\, and Alexandra Teague from the University of Idaho\n5:30pm–7:00pm\, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU \nJoin us for the WSU Department of English Visiting Writers Series! Every year VWS brings noted poets and writers of fiction and nonfiction to campus for readings\, class visits\, workshops\, and collaborative exchanges across intellectual and artistic disciplines. This October we welcome creative writing faculty from the nearby University of Idaho to share recent writings and experiences. \nThomas Dai is the author of Take My Name but Say It Slow (W. W. Norton\, 2025)\, a collection of essays interrogating travel\, place\, Asian American identity\, and other imperfect means of mapping the self. He primarily teaches courses on creative nonfiction\, especially the essay in all its many forms\, but is also interested in autofiction\, science and nature writing\, and writing that integrates visual media. With a background in both creative and critical writing practices\, Thomas’s more recent work interweaves creative nonfiction with more scholarly writing to think about the intersections of race\, queerness\, and ecology. \nMichael McGriff is an author\, editor\, and translator. He is the co-author\, with J. M. Tyree\, of the linked story collection Our Secret Life in the Movies\, which was selected as one of NPR’s Best Books of 2014 and featured on Weekend Edition Sunday. His poetry collections include Inquest\, Angel Sharpening its Beak\, Eternal Sentences\, Early Hour\, Black Postcards\, Home Burial\, and Dismantling the Hills. \nAlexandra Teague is the author of three books of poetry: Or What We’ll Call Desire (Persea\, 2019)\, The Wise and Foolish Builders(Persea\, 2015)\, and Mortal Geography (Persea\, 2010). She is also the author of the novel The Principles Behind Flotation (Skyhorse\, 2017) and a memoir in essays\, Spinning Tea Cups: A Mythical American Memoir (Oregon State University Press\, 2023). Her work has been praised in such publications as Booklist\, The Huffington Post\, and The New York Times as “a strong feminist penman to watch\,” “formally impressive\,” and “passionate\, quirky\, and righteously outraged.” \nImage | Alexandra Teague\, Michael McGriff\, and Thomas Dai \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation & Parking\nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU is located in the Crimson Cube (on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium and the CUB) on the WSU Pullman campus.
