SUMMARY:2021 | Art & Healing: Cello Performance 1 by Ruth Boden
DESCRIPTION:From 440 to 432; Taking the Tension Out\nCello performance by Ruth Boden in conversation with Trimpin’s sound sculpture Ambiente432. Comprised of 12 motion-responsive resonator horns suspended from the ceiling and organized in strategic configurations\, Ambiente432 is tuned precisely to 432Hz. Known as Verdi’s ‘A’\, this vibration frequency recurs in the tuning of ancient Tibetan singing bowls\, Stradivarius instruments\, and 20th century physicist W. O. Schumann calculated the Earth’s rhythms at a cycle close to the fundamental frequency of 432Hz. \nAbout Ruth Boden\nDr. Ruth Boden is an Associate Professor in the School of Music at Washington State University where she teaches cello\, bass\, music theory and coordinates the chamber music program. Dr. Boden holds a B.M. and M.M. in cello performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music\, and a D.M.A. from the University of Alabama. \nBoden is an active performer and has appeared as a guest artist with the Mid-Columbia Symphony\, Washington Idaho Symphony\, Coeur D’ Alene Symphony\, and gave the premier performance of Philip Wharton’s Concerto for Violin and Cello with the Rendezvous Orchestra in Moscow\, Idaho. She has also been a member of numerous orchestras throughout the Southeast and Northwest\, including the Pensacola Symphony\, Huntsville Symphony\, Tuscaloosa Symphony\, Washington Idaho Symphony\, and Spokane Symphony among others. Additionally\, Ruth has worked with several notable chamber artists including the Vermeer\, Juilliard\, Miami\, and Cavani String Quartets and the Diaz Trio. She served as the interim conductor for the Washington State University Symphony Orchestra from 2009-2011\, interim Artistic Director and conductor for the Spokane Youth Symphony during the 2013-2014 season\, and has served as guest conductor and clinician for numerous festivals throughout the Northwest. \nBoden is a staunch supporter of new and contemporary music. She released her first solo CD Off the Cuff in July of 2014 which features eclectic contemporary music for solo cello. Before working at WSU\, Dr. Luethi was a choir and musical theatre director for high school and middle school students in the Green Bay area. DESCRIPTION:Public Tours: Wednesdays and Fridays\, 3:00–3:30 p.m.\n\nWednesdays\, August 25 and September 1\nFridays\, August 27 and September 3\n \nThe Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU will be closed Aug. 7–23 to deinstall its current exhibitions. The museum reopens on Tuesday\, Aug. 24 and is extending a special invitation to the community. Museum staff will be revealing the hidden\, mysterious world behind the gallery walls by performing “back of house” curatorial tasks within the gallery space as they prepare two new exhibitions: Mirror\, Mirror: The Prints of Alison Saar\, from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation and the Black Lives Matter Artist Grant Exhibition. \nThis special two‑week viewing takes place during a time in which museums are seeking to become more transparent and participatory\, leading to an accessible and socially engaging visit. Exhibition installation progress will change constantly during the sneak peek period. Each day will offer a potentially new experience for the viewer and make visible the methods of preservation and scholarship that are essential to any museum. \nTo participate in this special invitation for a behind the scenes view\, visit the museum Aug. 24–28 and Aug. 31–Sept. 4\, Tuesday through Friday 1 to 4 p.m.\, and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nPublic tours during this time will be available from 3 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays with Education Coordinator Kristin Becker. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Alison Saar in the museum galleries on Wednesday\, September 29\, from 2-3 p.m. for a personal tour of Mirror\, Mirror: The Prints of Alison Saar: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation\, a retrospective exhibition featuring nearly 50 prints and five sculptures by this renowned Los Angeles–based artist. \nAmerican artist Alison Saar is a master of printmaking and sculpture. She employs a personal vocabulary informed by history\, race\, and mythology. Her influences range from ancient Europe\, Africa\, and American folk art. Saar’s works narrate stories of the African American experience\, moving effortlessly from the personal to the political. In many of her works\, she charts the tragic history of slavery in America\, but her figures symbolize defiance and strength. Staff will be on-hand to discuss the history of letterpress printing\, provide background on our Kelsey Victor 8 x 10 platen press\, and assist attendees in practicing laying type and printing sample formes (the letterpress term for lines of type that are ready to be printed). DESCRIPTION:Join guest curator Melissa Feldman in the museum galleries on Thursday\, January 20\, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. for a reception and gallery talk about the exhibition Indie Folk: New Art and Sounds from the Pacific Northwest. The gallery talk will begin at 4:30 p.m. The exhibition features the work of 17 artists—both established and emerging—from throughout the Northwest region in an exploration of its unique artistic ecosystem involving craft traditions\, pre-industrial cultures\, and Indigenous and settler histories. \nOrganized by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU and guest curated by Melissa E. Feldman. Indie Folk will travel to the Schneider Museum of Art\, Ashland\, OR and the Bellevue Arts Museum\, Bellevue\, WA. Funding for this exhibition is provided by the Samuel H. and Patricia W. Smith Endowment\, the Mildred S. Bissinger Endowment\, Patrick and Elizabeth Siler\, Nancy Spitzer\, and members of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU.\n \nAbout the Curator | Along with her ongoing work as an independent curator and writer\, Melissa Feldman held positions for the last several years as Distinguished Visiting Faculty at Cornish College of the Arts\, Seattle\, and Director of the Neddy Artist Awards. Recent curatorial projects include Uses of History (2019) at studio e\, Seattle; Push Play\, an Independent Curators International touring exhibition (2013-17): A Cool Breeze: L.A. and Vancouver Art in the 1960s and Beyond at Griffin Art Projects\, Vancouver B.C. (2017); Another Minimalism: Art After California Light and Space (2015-16)\, at the Fruitmarket Gallery\, Edinburgh and UK tour; Dance Rehearsal: Karen Kilimnik’s World of Ballet and Theatre (2012) at Mills College Art Museum\, Oakland and the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Denver. The Jo Hockenhull Lecture series\, organized by the Program in Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS)\, the Fine Arts Department\, and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU\, has named Alison Saar as the Visiting Lecturer for 2022. Saar will discuss the connections between art and social justice as she provides an overview of her work in sculpture and printmaking. This event is free to the public. \nAmerican artist Alison Saar is known not only for her powerful sculptures—she is also a master of the art of printmaking. In both forms\, she employs a personal vocabulary informed by history\, race\, and mythology. Her influences range from ancient Europe\, Africa\, and American folk art. Saar’s works narrate stories of the African American experience\, moving effortlessly from the personal to the political. In many of her works\, she charts the tragic history of slavery in America\, but her figures symbolize defiance and strength. Other recurring images are informed by jazz\, romance\, and desire. Mirror\, Mirror: The Prints of Alison Saar: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation—featuring nearly 50 prints and five sculptures by the Los Angeles–based artist—is on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art through March 12\, 2022. \nThe Hockenhull lecture series was launched in 1996 by the Women’s Studies Department in collaboration with the Department of Fine Arts to honor Jo Hockenhull\, a WSU emeritus professor of Fine Arts who served as director of women’s studies for more than a decade. At WSU\, Hockenhull focused on building programs and initiatives supporting diversity\, the liberal arts\, free speech\, and critical thinking. Past lecturers have been visual artists\, poets\, and performance artists who have emphasized the important connections between art\, social justice\, and political practice. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 22\, 2022\, 4:00–5:00 p.m.\nJordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Pavilion Gallery\n\nJoin the museum for a free performance by Bigger Boat in the Pavilion Gallery on Friday\, April 22 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Bigger Boat is an a cappella group from Moscow\, ID that sings sea shanties and maritime songs. \nLive performances at the museum this month are an offshoot of the exhibition Indie Folk: New Art and Sounds from the Pacific Northwest\, which features a playlist by Eric Isaacson of Mississippi Records. According to Isaacson\, “the music genre Northwest Indie Folk could mean a lot of different things to different people. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 29\, 2022\, 4:00–7:00 p.m.\nTerrell Mall immediately outside the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art\n\nJoin the museum for a free outdoor concert on Friday\, April 29 from 4:00-7:00 p.m.\, featuring Portland musician Brian Mumford of Dragging an Ox Through Water\, from our Indie Folk playlist. Pullman’s own Raza NorthWest\, featuring WSU faculty Darryl Singleton and Alan Malfavon\, will open the concert playing son jarocho\, a style of Mexican folk music that reinforces the Mexican-American influences heard on the Indie Folk playlist. \nLive performances at the museum this month are an offshoot of the exhibition Indie Folk: New Art and Sounds from the Pacific Northwest\, with a playlist by Eric Isaacson of Mississippi Records. Our region is home to many cultures that have adapted their traditional folk music to the modern world: The term ‘Indie Folk’ would apply to them all.” \nA smaller Indie Folk concert will take place Friday\, April 22 from 4:00-5:00 p.m. featuring Bigger Boat\, an a cappella group from Moscow\, ID that sings sea shanties and maritime songs. \nConcerts are produced in collaboration with the WSU Student Entertainment Board. \nAbout the Musicians\nDragging an Ox Through Water | Brian Mumford of Dragging an Ox Through Water uses homemade light sensitive electronics that respond to a candle’s random flicker to determine a lot of the sounds in his songs. He’s played in art punk band Sun Foot with local artists Chris Johanson and Ron Burns as well as other DIY bands such as Jackie O Motherfucker and the Deep-Fried Boogie Band. (Featured image above courtesy of beastiary.) \nRaza NorthWest | This duo came together originally to play son jarocho\, a style of folk music indigenous to the Veracruz region of Mexico. Some elements\, including its principal instrument\, the guitar-like jarana\, have Spanish roots. Other aspects trace back through Cuba to Africa\, such as the marimbol\, a traditional bass instrument in the genre. Raza NorthWest performances take audiences on a journey featuring son jarocho\, samba\, pop and reggae; all are music with indigenous and folk roots that speak to common human experience. Please join us Saturday\, June 25 from 10-11am for Marcia Gossard’s class.\nJoin us for a therapeutic yoga and dance class with Kristine Zakarison at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU. This class encourages interaction with Ambiente432. Created by the artist and composer Trimpin\, the sculpture is comprised of 12 motion-responsive resonator horns suspended from the ceiling and organized in strategic configurations\, tuned precisely to 432Hz. Known as Verdi’s ‘A’\, this vibration frequency recurs in the tuning of ancient Tibetan singing bowls and Stradivarius instruments\, and is thought by many to be a healing frequency. Sessions are drop-in and open to the public. No advance registration required. \nClasses are by-donation and all proceeds will go to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. WSU Unity of Ukraine founders will be present to say a few words about the healing efforts needed for Ukraine at the start of each class. \nPlease bring your own yoga mat and come dressed appropriately for class. She has studied Iyengar yoga with Jeri Hudak since 1997\, and has also studied with Ingela Abbott\, Judith Lasater\, Lynne Minton\, George Purvis\, John Schumacher\, Janice Vien\, and Rodney Yee.  She served as vice president of the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Northwest (IYANW) board. He trains faculty and staff in mindfulness-based anti-racism\, self-awareness\, contemplative pedagogy\, and racial healing practices. Through his work with the university\, Trymaine has facilitated mindfulness retreats\, implicit bias training\, and mindfulness-based anti-racism training. Trymaine is also a Certified MBSR (Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction) Teacher and completed his training through the Center for Mindfulness at Brown University. Trymaine attended North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University with a major in Business Management. DESCRIPTION:Art & Healing Wellness Classes with Ambiente432:\nMindful Movement and Improvisational Dance with Elise Kapsi\nWednesday\, July 13\, 12:00-1:00 p.m.\nPavilion Gallery\, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU\nJoin us for a mindful movement and improvisational dance class with Elise Kapsi at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU. Elise’s class will use mindful movement and improvisation to create interpretive\, expressive\, and energizing work for all. The class will incorporate various dance styles from contemporary to hip-hop\, allowing dancers to experience the flow of movement without inhibition. Open to all levels and experiences\, no prior experience necessary. Sessions are drop-in and open to the public. No advance registration required. \nThis dance session encourages interaction with Ambiente432. Created by the artist and composer Trimpin\, the sculpture is comprised of 12 motion-responsive resonator horns suspended from the ceiling and organized in strategic configurations\, tuned precisely to 432Hz. Known as Verdi’s ‘A’\, this vibration frequency recurs in the tuning of ancient Tibetan singing bowls and Stradivarius instruments\, and is thought by many to be a healing frequency. \nClasses are by-donation and all proceeds will go to support humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. WSU Unity of Ukraine founders will be present to say a few words about the healing efforts needed for Ukraine at the start of each class. \nPlease come dressed appropriately for class. Dance participants will be asked to sign a standard assumption of risk and release of liability form. \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR | Elise Kapsi (she/her) is a Spin and Soul Fusion instructor for University Recreation. Her background also consists of training in ballet\, jazz\, tap\, pointe\, hip-hop\, yoga\, and contemporary\, and previous teaching engagements with the Mid-Columbia Ballet\, Tri-Cities Academy of Ballet and Music\, and WSU’s Kinesiology department. Born and raised in Tri-Cities\, Washington\, she is in her third year at WSU\, pursuing a double major in Innovation and Change Management and Management Information Systems though the Honors College. Elise believes exercise is an important aspect of mental health and she looks forward to sharing her passion with her students. \nQUESTIONS? DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, OCTOBER 25\, 2022  |  5:00 P.M.\nIN PERSON – JORDAN SCHNITZER MUSEUM OF ART\nFREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC\nOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE LIVESTREAM \nSam Roxas-Chua 姚 (Yao) is a transracial/transcultural adopted person. He is the author of Saying Your Name Three Times Underwater\, Echolalia in Script\, Fawn Language\, and the podcast Dear Someone Somewhere\, an audio-journal project. His open-form calligraphy\, artworks\, and writing have appeared in various journals and galleries. Sam is a poet in the periphery\, a multimedia artist\, field recordist\, and an amateur radio operator. He’s read for PEN International\, city government events\, and is currently an artist-in-residence at the Portland Chinatown Museum. Poet Tyehimba Jess describes Sam’s poems as “surreal yet rooted in palpable color and history … it transcends oceans\, blends geographies\, and bleeds a multitongued heritage for us to better find ourselves.” \nAbout | The WSU Visiting Writers Series brings noted poets and writers of fiction and nonfiction to campus for creative readings\, class visits\, workshops\, and collaborative exchanges across intellectual and artistic disciplines. \nCommon Reading credit available. \nDon’t miss the exhibits on display at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art during Sam Roxas-Chua’s visit.
