SUMMARY:Marie Watt: Jo Hockenhull Distinguished Lecturer for 2018
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 12\, 4:30 p.m.\, Fine Arts Auditorium 5062\, Fine Arts Center\, WSU \nThe Jo Hockenhull Lecture series\, organized by the Women’s Studies Program\, the Fine Arts Department\, and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU\, has named Marie Watt as the Visiting Lecturer for 2018. Watt will discuss the connections between art\, activism\, and feminist politics. This event is free and open to the public with a reception to follow. \nUsing various media\, including reclaimed wool blankets\, felt\, pine\, cedar\, and iron\, Marie Watt’s work grapples with indigenous politics\, feminism\, and the relationship between history and memory. Watt received her MFA degree in painting and printmaking from Yale University. Her work has been exhibited at the Tacoma Art Museum\, the Rockwell Museum\, Northwestern University’s Block Museum of Art and the Denver Art Museum. In 2015\, Watt worked on piece in which she conducted sewing circles with students from Tierra Ecnantada High School to draw attention to the collaborative nature of aesthetic creations. Watt is a member of the Turtle Clan of the Seneca Nation and mobilizes several Native American traditions of storytelling and community formation in her work. Her most recent exhibition\, Companion Species (Underbelly) will be on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU from April 6\, 2018 to through September 1\, 2018. \nWatt received her MFA degree in painting and printmaking from Yale University. Her most recent exhibition\, Companion Species (Underbelly) will be on view at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU from April 6\, 2018 to through September 1\, 2018. \nThe Hockenhull lecture series was launched in 1996 by the Women’s Studies Department in collaboration with the Department of Fine Arts to honor Jo Hockenhull\, a WSU emeritus professor of Fine Arts who served as director of women’s studies for more than a decade. At WSU\, Hockenhull focused on building programs and initiatives supporting diversity\, the liberal arts\, free speech\, and critical thinking. SUMMARY:CLOSING RECEPTION & JOINT LECTURE with Wendy Red Star and Beatrice Red Star Fletcher
DESCRIPTION:The current Museum of Art/WSU is closing its doors after 42 years of dedicated service to the arts. We will reopen with a new name\, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art/WSU\, in a newly completed building on Mom’s weekend 2018. Join us for a closing reception party and special lecture by Wendy Red Star and her ten year old daughter\, Beatrice Red Star Fletcher from 5-7 pm on November 17\, 2017\, in the current gallery space. \nCLOSING RECEPTION: Fri\, 11/17\, 5-7pm\nJOINT LECTURE: Fri\, 11/17\, 5-6pm\, with Wendy Red Star and Beatrice Red Star Fletcher \nAbout Wendy Red Star: (Native American\, Crow\, b. 1981)\nThrough incorporating a variety of media in her practice\, Wendy Red Star uses her art as a response to address the widespread misrepresentation of Native Americans in popular culture and examine the intersection between colonialist structures and Native American beliefs. Historic photographs like those of photographer\, Edward Curtis\, misrepresented Native culture by over-romanticizing Native Americans from a white perspective\, which is still apparent in modern mainstream culture in the form of sports mascots or sexualized costumes. Humor and surrealism become a vehicle for Red Star as she investigates Crow culture in her work\, which is simultaneously critical and celebratory—a tool for “decolonizing the way people are seeing things.” Born in Billings\, Montana in 1981\, Wendy Red Star was raised on the Apsáalooke (Crow) reservation in southeastern Montana. Red Star received her BFA in sculpture from Montana State University and an MFA from the University of California\, Los Angeles. \n“As a brown person\, as a brown artist\, your work is political … I don’t aim to do political work\, but it becomes political because it’s talking outside the colonial framework.” \nLOCATION | The Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, noon – 4 p.m.\, closed Sunday and Monday. For more information please contact the museum at 509-335-1910.

SUMMARY:2017 SUMMER | CURATORS CHOICE EXHIBIT
DESCRIPTION:Reflections on Place through WSU Faculty and the Museum Collection\nMay 16 – June 30\, 2017\n \n“The intersections of nature\, culture\, history\, and ideology form the ground on which we stand—our land\, our place\, the local.” –Lucy Lippard \nABOUT | In his essay Towards a Critical Regionalism\, architectural historian Kenneth Frampton denounced the prevailing “international” style of architecture—modular\, rational\, often partly pre-fabricated—for reducing regional variance to the point that new buildings in cities across the world were beginning to look altogether and everywhere the same. As an ensuing extension of Frampton’s argument\, artists of various disciplines have taken up the challenge of balancing regional difference within a hyper-connected\, globalized world. Today’s culture-makers have an opportunity to benefit from burgeoning avenues of information exchange and de-centralized seats of power\, while critically responding to local conditions; reflective of their community’s histories\, cultural-makeup\, and the particulars of the surrounding land. \nPoints of Interest brings together four Washington State University faculty members—Ruth Boden\, Kevin Haas\, Taiji Miyasaka\, and Linda Russo—whom each\, in their own way\, provide a lens onto the multi-faceted idea of “place.” Through their creative practices and current research these individuals probe themes of uniqueness as it pertains to locale\, but also\, degrees of sameness and shared commonalities through cultural synthesis. Supplementing and providing context to their inquiries will be selections of place-based works drawn from the museum’s permanent collection of over 3500 objects. \nThe Museum of Art is committed to the idea that a museum has a responsibility to recognize the creative talent of its region.  Anna-Maria Shannon\, Interim Director of the museum adds\, “Our over-arching goal is to support creativity and innovation in students who can seek out divergent opinions\, examine complex issues from a variety of perspectives and find meaning in the world.” \nLOCATION | The Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, noon – 4 p.m.\, closed Sunday and Monday. SUMMARY:2016 FALL | NW Alternative Comics Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art/WSU announces a Northwest Alternative Comics Exhibition\, Sep. 26–Dec. 17. AN OPENING RECEPTION WILL BE HELD 5-7 PM THURSDAY\, OCTOBER 6\, IN THE MUSEUM OF ART GALLERY. Admission to the museum is free. \nABOUT | The Northwest is seen by many as the birthplace of alternative comics\, a genre which blended the legacy of Bay-Area “underground comix” with a DIY punk-ethos\, while in step with a burgeoning independent music scene. Coalescing around The Evergreen State College in the early 1980s\, gifted cartoonists Matt Groening\, Lynda Barry\, and Charles Burns published their comic strips in small alternative weeklies\, helping to lay the foundation for the cultural phenomenon that would develop around Seattle in the 1990s. Originally underground and bohemian-based\, today the regional comic scene is bigger and more active than ever before. \nNorthwest Alternative Comics will feature a select sampling of emerging and highly-recognized artists and illustrators who make up the alternative comics genre of our region. With an emphasis on individuals who are willing to reinvent the way we look at and experience the art of comics and graphic arts\, our exhibition offers an alternative to mainstream superhero comics by highlighting diverse narratives and new visual formats. The exhibition includes artists Peter Bagge\, Paul Chadwick\, Max Clotfelter\, Taylor Dow\, Ellen Forney\, Eroyn Franklin\, David Lasky\, Mita Mahato\, Tom Van Deusen and Jim Woodring.  Special thanks to exhibit advisors Larry Reid of Fantagraphics Books and Casey Bruce of Danger Room Comics. \nCOUGAR COMIX JAM:  Thurs\, 9/22\, 5-10pm\, Rico’s Pub\, Downtown Pullman\nLearn to make comic zines with Tom and Max. SUMMARY:CHRIS WATTS | 2016 Fine Arts Faculty Focus Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art/WSU announces a retrospective journey in a Fine Arts Faculty Focus Exhibition by artist Chris Watts\, Aug. 22– Sept. 17. An opening reception will be held 6 p.m. Thursday\, Aug. 25\, in the Museum of Art gallery with a talk given by the artist at 7 p.m.  Admission to the museum is free. \nThe Museum of Art has a long-standing tradition of presenting work by department of Fine Arts faculty members. Since 2004\, these exhibits have alternated large group shows with a biennial exhibit showcasing a recently retired faculty member. This year the museum presents a retrospective exhibit of Chris Watts’ work\, who retired in 2015\, after 27 years of teaching drawing and painting at WSU. \nABOUT | Citing influences as diverse as Bronze Age monuments\, spirals and mazes\, Pythagoras\, counting processes\, scientific structures\, bell ringing\, Theosophy\, and the geometric tradition in art; Chris Watts’  work represents a long-term inquiry into systems of order\, patterning\, and to a certain degree\, spiritual or esoteric ideas. His investigation of the underlying structures of the world around us—expressed through drawings\, paintings and constructions—connects Watts to a long lineage of peoples who have organized worldviews through pattern and abstract form. \nLOCATION | The Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays and closed on Sundays. For more information please contact the museum at 509-335-1910. \nSPECIAL THANKS | This exhibit is funded by the Members of the Museum of Art and the Samuel H. and Patricia W. Smith Arts Endowment.

SUMMARY:2016 From the Collection: New Acquisitions | WSU Museum Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:FROM THE COLLECTION: NEW ACQUISITIONS\nEXHIBITION | May 17 – July 1\, 2016 \nOver the last five years\, the Museum of Art/WSU has added more than 500 works of art to the permanent collection through generous gifts of the museum’s friends. Now totaling approximately 3500 unique objects\, the collection provides a lasting legacy of the 20th and 21st centuries’ visual language. Held and cared for in our community’s trust\, the collection is a campus educational resource and foundation for approaching emergent art forms we can only begin to imagine. \nFrom the Collection: New Acquisitions puts on view\, in many instances for the first time\, selections from collection newcomers. These works have deepened holdings of previously collected artists and serve to introduce new artists to us. The exhibition also serves as a reminder of the generosity of many donors who understand the value of sharing great art with our community. \nRecent significant gifts include 35 original works of Northwest art from the Seattle Art Museum\, 201 original prints by the contemporary American artist Jim Dine\, and 174 prints and photographs by Andy Warhol from the Andy Warhol Foundation. The Museum has received 8 outstanding examples of contemporary art making from the Greg Kucera Gallery and 4 works on paper by the recently deceased artist Rick Bartow from Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and Froelick Gallery\, Portland. Additionally\, exceptional donations of artwork have been accepted from individuals\, such as Scott Patnode’s gift of 5 American and British works\, Jane Orleman’s donation of her late husband Richard C. Elliott’s prints\, Patricia Patterson’s donation of prints by Sister Mary Corita Kent\, and Sean Elwood’s continued giving—tallying over 300 artworks. It is only through such philanthropy that museum collections grow and our horizons evolve. \nFUNDING  |  Funding for this exhibition is provided by the Members of the Museum of Art and the Samuel H. and Patricia W. Smith Art Endowment.\n_________ \nSPECIAL THANKS | This exhibition benefited from student curatorial involvement from the following individuals: Kendra Fleharty\, Haley Markham\, and Jonathon Matteson.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Curators’ Choices: The Greg Kucera & Larry Yocom Collection at WSU Museum
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the exhibition Curators’ Choices: The Greg Kucera & Larry Yocom Collection. \nABOUT THE EXHIBIT | Distinguished as one of the Northwest’s longest-standing and respected gallerists\, Seattle resident Greg Kucera with his husband Larry Yocom\, have also built an extensive private art collection. Assembled collaboratively over a 30-year span\, the Kucera/Yocom collection focuses primarily on contemporary and historic art of the Northwest\, while encompassing many significant works by internationally-known artists. Varied and nuanced\, their collection contains additional holdings of erotica\, including Japanese shunga\, as well as objects by self-taught makers and decorative arts from the world-over. \nABOUT THE COLLECTION | Collection-building at such an involved level is ultimately a highly personal curatorial enterprise\, following themes of interest “with eyes that remain fresh” on the lookout for unexpected expressions of creativity. Our exhibition honors the selectivity of Greg and Larry\, and reflects further shaping by the curatorial team here at Museum of Art. Additionally\, the exhibition affords us an opportunity to survey a cultural ecosystem where artist\, dealer\, collector\, curator\, and the public-at-large all have key contributions to make. \nLOCATION | The Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, Thursday open until 7 pm\, *Closed Sunday*.  For more information please contact the museum at (509) 335-1910. SUMMARY:POETRY READING: Intersections\, The Poetics of Jim Dine at WSU Museum
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT  |  INTERSECTIONS: The Poetics of Jim Dine marks a collaboration between WSU’s Museum of Art\, Department of English\, and the University of Idaho’s Department of English as we explore the mutually shared worlds of art and literature.  This public event will offer an evening of poetry/literature readings in the museum gallery surrounded and inspired by the art of Jim Dine. \nPRESENTERS  |  Including Debbie Lee (WSU)\, Kimberly Burwick (WSU)\, and Alexandra Teague (UI)\, as well as select student writers. \nTHEMES  |  Many autobiographical themes run through the MOA/WSU Jim Dine Collection. One of the more significant influences upon Dine is the artist’s lifelong interest in literature\, particularly poetry. He himself has written poetry and at times incorporated his writings into his artworks\, installations\, and performances – exploring the intersection of the written word and art. References to literary themes are common throughout the artist’s repertoire as are specific gestures to authors such as Arthur Rimbaud and Gustave Flaubert\, and large numbers of artworks related to Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio. \nABOUT THE PRESENTERS  | \nKIMBERLY BURWICK is the author of three collections of poetry: Has No Kinsmen (Red Hen Press\, 2006)\, Horses in the Cathedral\, winner of the Robert Dana Prize (Anhinga Press\, 2011) and Good Night Brother\, winner of the Burnside Review Prize\, (Burnside Review Press\, 2014).  She teaches creative writing at Washington State University and at UCLA Extension. Originally from New England\, she now lives in Moscow\, Idaho with her husband and four-year-old son. \nDEBBIE LEE received her PhD from the University of Arizona\, in Tucson\, in 1998\, and began teaching at Washington State University that same year. She has specialties in two different fields: Western wilderness literature and history\, and Late-eighteenth century and early nineteenth-century British literature and history. She is currently working on a book\, manuscript and photograph archive\, and oral history collection funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and titled: The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness History Project. \nALEXANDRA TEAGUE’s first book of poetry\, Mortal Geography\, won Persea Books’ 2009 Lexi Rudnitsky Prize and the 2010 California Book Award. Her second book\, The Wise and Foolish Builders\, will be published by Persea in April 2015. Her work has also appeared in “Best American Poetry 2009\,” “Best New Poets 2008” and many journals. She has taught at University of Miami\, City College of San Francisco\, and Stanford\, and spent Fall 2010 as Visiting Professor of Poetry in the BA/MFA programs at University of Arkansas (near her old hometown of Eureka Springs). She currently teaches at the University of Idaho\, is a faculty advisor for Fugue\, an editor for Broadsided Press\, and an active member of the interdisciplinary arts BASK Collective\, of which she is a founding member. She is working on her third manuscript.

SUMMARY:FILM NIGHT/RECEPTION: Two Jim Dine films at the CUB Auditorium\, reception at WSU Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Art/WSU and WSU’s Student Entertainment Board to screen two award-winning documentary films on the artist Jim Dine. Begin your evening in the CUB Auditorium viewing Jim Dine: A Self Portrait on the Walls (1995) and All about Looking (1996)\, then transition to the MOA gallery to enjoy the exhibition Jim Dine: A Life in Printmaking. Light refreshments provided. \nDETAILS  | Thursday\, October 22\, CUB Auditorium\, 6-7pm film screenings\, 7-8pm reception in MOA Gallery with light refreshments. \nJIM DINE: A SELF PORTRAIT ON THE WALLS  |  1995  |  28 minutes. Nominated for Academy Award for Best Documentary Short. This remarkable documentary records eight days of intense work and quiet rumination as internationally renowned artist Jim Dine produces an exhibition of huge\, bold charcoal drawings directly on the walls of the Ludwigsburg Kunstverein near Stuttgart\, Germany. It is an unusual and transitory exhibition in that the drawings remain on the walls for only six weeks before being painted over. \nALL ABOUT LOOKING  |  1996  |  29 minutes  |  Renowned American artist Jim Dine teaches drawing at the famed Internationale Sommerakademie fur Bildene Kunst in Salzburg\, Austria. The method is rigorous: Models maintain one pose per week; students keep their easels in the same place and each day make a complete\, well-observed drawing; then every morning the students have to erase their work and start again.

All sale proceeds will directly support our goal of building a new Museum of Art at the heart of the WSU campus. \nFundraiser/Art Sale: At any point during the duration of the exhibition\, patrons may contribute to the Campaign for a New Museum of Art by purchasing works of art through Anna-Maria Shannon at annamshannon@wsu.edu. All works will be available for pickup after the closing celebration on July 9\, 2015. \nThe Museum of Art is committed to the idea that a museum has a responsibility to recognize the creative talent of its region.  Our over-arching goal is to support creativity and innovation in students who can seek out divergent opinions\, examine complex issues from a variety of perspectives and find meaning in the world. \nThe Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Summer gallery hours are Tues – Friday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, closed Saturday- Monday.  For more information please contact the museum at (509) 335-1910.
