Students use their cameras as a vehicle to create portraits of our nuanced communities while simultaneously posing the question\, “What constitutes a lasting and meaningful image?”  \nCorbis: From the Collection of Tony and Leslie Rojas \nSince its founding\, Corbis has collected hundreds of thousands of photographs that represent great and small moments throughout history. Here we showcase a selection of 32 iconic photographs through times of war or peace\, the first flight at Kitty Hawk and the moon landing\, and the quest for civil rights. Each picture stands as a defining visual moment within a signature event or personality in the 20th century. All works come to us from the Tony and Leslie Rojas Collection of Photography. \nVivian Maier \nVivian Maier was born in 1926 and spent most of a quiet anonymous life in Chicago. She died in 2009 and left no heirs or family. Unbeknownst to anyone\, she did however leave a legacy of brilliant “street photography:” a hundred thousand negatives\, thousands of rolls of undeveloped film\, in color and black and white\, and one hundred and fifty 8-mm. and 16-mm. films. The images exhibited represent a selection of the photographs that were discovered after her death. \nFunding for this exhibition is provided by Tony & Leslie Rojas and Members of the Museum of Art. SUMMARY:Documentary Screening\, Witness: The Legacy of Heart Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Three time Emmy Award winning documentary Witness: The Legacy of Heart Mountain tells the story of the Heart Mountain internment camp with 10\,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned behind barbed wire and guard towers for no other reason than their heritage. Japanese American internment is a profound chapter of American history. This film’s mission is to keep that history alive and tell the story through pictures. \nWithin the camp\, Patti Hirahara’s father and grandfather had a secret dark room under their barracks where they developed film. SUMMARY:Reception “Witness: The Legacy of Heart Mountain”
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a reception before the documentary screening at 6 p.m.\, Wednesday\, Oct. 15\, in the Museum of Art gallery. Meet Emmy award winning creators\, producers and editors\, then head on over to the CUB Auditorium to view the documentary at 7 p.m. A special panel discussion will follow the movie. \nThree time Emmy Award winning documentary Witness: The Legacy of Heart Mountain tells the story of the Heart Mountain internment camp with 10\,000 Japanese Americans imprisoned behind barbed wire and guard towers for no other reason than their heritage. Japanese American internment is a profound chapter of American history. This film’s mission is to keep that history alive and tell the story through pictures. \nWithin the camp\, Patti Hirahara’s father and grandfather had a secret dark room under their barracks where they developed film. In the years they were imprisoned\, they took thousands of photos\, each an opportunity to see the daily struggles of making camp life livable. These photos are now housed in the collection of Manuscripts\, Archives\, & Special Collections at the WSU Libraries. SUMMARY:Museum of Art/WSU Exhibit: Roger Shimomura: An American Knockoff
DESCRIPTION:The Washington State University Museum of Art announces the exhibition Roger Shimomura: An American Knockoff\, September 19 – December 13\, 2014.  An opening reception will be held 6 pm Thursday\, Sept. 18\, in the Museum of Art/WSU gallery with a talk given by the artist at 7 pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium.  Admission to the museum is free. \nWe are thrilled to present a survey exhibition of the work of Lawrence\, Kansas-based artist\, Roger Shimomura\, whose paintings and prints address sociopolitical issues of Asian America.  He does this through a painting style that combines his childhood interest in comic books\, American Pop Art and traditions of Japanese woodblock prints\, thereby evoking his Japanese ancestry while locating him firmly within modern American artistic developments. \nOur exhibition focuses on Shimomura’s most recent series\, An American Knockoff (2009-present)\, in which the artist inserts himself as an aging Asian Everyman in various guises\, both funny and poignant.  He does this as an imposter in or a battler against a host of ironic\, stereotypical settings: punching at a gaggle of Disney cartoon characters\, joining Chinese Mao-era brigades\, attacking Japanese stereotypes and assuming identities of such iconic American figures as Superman\, George Washington and Dick Tracy. \nThe Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday\, 10 am. – 4 pm.\, open until 7 pm on Thursdays and closed on Sundays. SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Museum Of Art\, Ann Christenson
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art/WSU announces a retrospective journey in a Fine Arts Faculty Focus Exhibition by artist Ann Christenson\, Aug. 18– Sept. 13. An opening reception will be held 6 p.m. Thursday\, Aug. 28\, in the Museum of Art gallery with a talk given by the artist at 7 p.m.  Admission to the museum is free. \nThe Museum of Art has a long-standing tradition of presenting work by department of Fine Arts faculty members. Since 2004\, these exhibits have alternated large group shows with a biennial exhibit showcasing a recently retired faculty member. This year the museum presents a retrospective exhibit of Ann Christenson’s work. \nAnn Christenson began teaching at WSU in 1990 as a ceramicist. Her work often resembles a confluence of juxtapositions: organic yet geometric\, industrial yet primeval\, intimate yet worldly\, and awkward yet elegant. She draws her influences from her cross-cultural experiences\, domestic environment\, and the natural world in order to explore space and material. She creates decorative ceramic forms that disrupt convention and echo an unexpected beauty. Intuition and improvisation often come into play\, and the diversity of ceramic art throughout the ages fuels her creations. \nThe Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays and closed on Sundays. The exhibition and the accompanying catalog were made possible\, in part\, by Dr. James B. Pick and Dr. Rosalyn M. Laudati\, and the continued support of the BAM/PFA Trustees. SUMMARY:Museum of Art/WSU: Made in U.S.A.: Rosenquist/Ruscha\, Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation.
DESCRIPTION:OPENING TODAY!\nMade in U.S.A.: Rosenquist/Ruscha\nPrints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation\nSeptember 20 – December 14\, 2013 \nThis exhibit pairs two of the most influential and complex artists in the Pop art genre\, with a selection of prints that span each artist’s career. \nSo\, two Pop artists – one East Coast\, the other West Coast; one “hot” the other “cool.” Both James Rosenquist and Ed Ruscha grew up in the mid-west in the 1940’s\, but Rosenquist went to New York (from Minnesota) and Ruscha went to Los Angeles (from Oklahoma). \nBoth artists worked as commercial artists early in their careers: Rosenquist was a billboard painter; Ruscha a layout artist for an advertising agency. Both artists revel in the mind-opening poetics of ordinary everyday imagery: Rosenquist in his wild smash-ups of seemingly disjointed imagery; Ruscha in his use of words as image. \nYou could say that Rosenquist expressed the intense compression of imagery he encountered in New York\, while Ruscha responded to the more isolated\, horizontal and open spaces of Southern California. \nBoth artists have made prints in parallel to their paintings\, throughout their long careers. \nAll works in the exhibition come from the vast collection of contemporary prints and multiples from Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. We are grateful for his passion for art and his generous loans so our audience can experience such a wide range of work by these two modern masters. \n* The Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation makes it collections of post-war prints and multiples available without exhibition fees and institutions have the opportunity to request grants to underwrite educational and outreach activities. The collection is conceived of as a ‘lending library’ with its mission to loan and exhibit contemporary prints and multiples in order to further appreciate the artists of our time. SUMMARY:Curator’s Choice: Making Faces\, Here’s Looking at You\, Keith
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art/WSU is proud to share the portrait paintings of the permanent collection in the upcoming exhibition Curator’s Choice: Making Faces\, Here’s Looking at You\, Keith! May 16-July 19\, 2013. Admission to the museum is always free. \nOur summer exhibition highlights a number of portraits from the permanent collection curated by the late Keith Wells. \nSince 2004\, Wells conducted his “dream job\,” putting together numerous exciting and ground-breaking exhibitions. His final exhibition literally creates a portrait of the permanent collection whose origins began in the 1920s and 30s President E.O. Holland commissioned Worth D. Griffin\, WSU artist and professor\, to create portraits of Native American leaders and pioneers. These works became the very first acquisitions and helped establish the Museum of Art/WSU. Since then the collection has grown immensely. \nFrom paintings of University dignitaries to screen prints of Marilyn Monroe\, the collection is a significant part of our artistic legacy. \nLocated on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Summer hours: Tues – Fri\, 12:00 – 4 p.m.\, closed Sat – Mon. For more information call (509) 335-1910.
