SUMMARY:Museum Reception\, Create Exhibition\, Jan. 30\, 6-8 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Museum of Art/WSU Presents CREATE: Art by Artists Outside the Mainstream \nThe Museum of Art/WSU is thrilled to present CREATE: Art by Artists Outside the Mainstream\, January 23 – April 5\, 2014 in the Museum of Art Gallery.  There will be an opening reception  Thursday\, January 30\, 6-8 pm in the Museum of Art/WSU Gallery.  As always\, all exhibitions at the Museum are free and open to the public. \nCreate is a major group exhibition presenting an exceptional selection of the most important works created over the past twenty years by artists involved with the three pioneering non-profit organizations: Creativity Explored\, Creative Growth Art Center\, and the National Institute for Art and Disabilities Art Center (NIAD). These organizations were founded with the belief that exceptional creativity can emerge in anyone and they support the work of artists with developmental disabilities through a unique and highly successful approach to group studio practice. “The artists featured in this exhibition—all of whom have some form of developmental disability—possess the talent\, independence\, and depth of feeling that makes the most powerful art possible\,” says curator Lawrence Rinder. \nCreate is a traveling exhibition curated by Lawrence Rinder\, with Matthew Higgs\, and organized by the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive and ICI (Independent Curators International)\, New York. The exhibition and the accompanying catalog were made possible\, in part\, by Dr. James B. Pick and Dr. Rosalyn M. Laudati\, and the continued support of the BAM/PFA Trustees. Additional support for the tour is made possible in part by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts\, The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation\, and the ICI Board of Trustees. \nThe Museum of Art is located on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Gallery hours are Monday – Saturday\, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.\, open until 7 p.m. on Thursdays and closed on Sundays.  For more information please contact the museum at (509) 335-1910 or visit our website at http://museum.wsu.edu.

SUMMARY:Museum of Art/WSU: Made in U.S.A.: Rosenquist/Ruscha\, Prints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation.
DESCRIPTION:OPENING TODAY!\nMade in U.S.A.: Rosenquist/Ruscha\nPrints from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation\nSeptember 20 – December 14\, 2013 \nThis exhibit pairs two of the most influential and complex artists in the Pop art genre\, with a selection of prints that span each artist’s career. \nSo\, two Pop artists – one East Coast\, the other West Coast; one “hot” the other “cool.” Both James Rosenquist and Ed Ruscha grew up in the mid-west in the 1940’s\, but Rosenquist went to New York (from Minnesota) and Ruscha went to Los Angeles (from Oklahoma). \nBoth artists worked as commercial artists early in their careers: Rosenquist was a billboard painter; Ruscha a layout artist for an advertising agency. Both artists revel in the mind-opening poetics of ordinary everyday imagery: Rosenquist in his wild smash-ups of seemingly disjointed imagery; Ruscha in his use of words as image. \nYou could say that Rosenquist expressed the intense compression of imagery he encountered in New York\, while Ruscha responded to the more isolated\, horizontal and open spaces of Southern California. \nBoth artists have made prints in parallel to their paintings\, throughout their long careers. \nAll works in the exhibition come from the vast collection of contemporary prints and multiples from Jordan D. Schnitzer and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. We are grateful for his passion for art and his generous loans so our audience can experience such a wide range of work by these two modern masters. \n* The Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation makes it collections of post-war prints and multiples available without exhibition fees and institutions have the opportunity to request grants to underwrite educational and outreach activities. The collection is conceived of as a ‘lending library’ with its mission to loan and exhibit contemporary prints and multiples in order to further appreciate the artists of our time. For more information please contact the museum at (509) 335-1910 or visit our website at museum.wsu.edu.

SUMMARY:Curator’s Choice: Making Faces\, Here’s Looking at You\, Keith
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art/WSU is proud to share the portrait paintings of the permanent collection in the upcoming exhibition Curator’s Choice: Making Faces\, Here’s Looking at You\, Keith! May 16-July 19\, 2013. Admission to the museum is always free. \nOur summer exhibition highlights a number of portraits from the permanent collection curated by the late Keith Wells. \nSince 2004\, Wells conducted his “dream job\,” putting together numerous exciting and ground-breaking exhibitions. His final exhibition literally creates a portrait of the permanent collection whose origins began in the 1920s and 30s President E.O. Holland commissioned Worth D. Griffin\, WSU artist and professor\, to create portraits of Native American leaders and pioneers. These works became the very first acquisitions and helped establish the Museum of Art/WSU. Since then the collection has grown immensely. \nFrom paintings of University dignitaries to screen prints of Marilyn Monroe\, the collection is a significant part of our artistic legacy. \nLocated on Wilson Road across from Martin Stadium in the Fine Arts Center on the WSU Pullman campus. Summer hours: Tues – Fri\, 12:00 – 4 p.m.\, closed Sat – Mon. For more information call (509) 335-1910.

SUMMARY:Please Participate! Memorial Tribute 4/9 for Curator Keith Wells
DESCRIPTION:MEMORIAL TRIBUTE\nIn Memory of Keith Wells\nCurator\, Museum of Art/WSU \nAs you have probably heard by now\, our dear curator Keith Wells passed away unexpectedly in February. We are hosting a Memorial Tribute in memory of Keith on Tuesday\, April 9th at noon in the Museum of Art Gallery and would like to invite everyone who knew Keith to attend and\, if you wish\, to bring a remembrance to share. \nSomething simple but meaningful might be: quotes\, memories of Keith\, small drawings or paintings\, photos\, and good wishes for Keith’s wife Alma and his kids Levi and Bronté. \nWe’d love to make this a celebration of Keith’s life. There will be a large bulletin board in the gallery on which we will display our memories. \nPlease feel free to share this and invite anyone else who may have known Keith. We would like to make this a true celebration of his life and of his contribution to the Fine Arts Department and the Museum. \nThank you\, and we are looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday\, April 9th at noon. \nContact: Debby Stinson debby_stinson@wsu.edu
